U.s. Soccer Academy Tryouts

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

The Clearwater Chargers and the Premier Sports Campus of Lakewood Ranch are pleased to announce that the United States Soccer Federation Development Academy tryouts will be held tomorrow night, May 4, at the sports campus in Lakewood Ranch.

“This is the highest level of youth soccer in America,” said Tim Mulqueen, Lakewood Ranch’s director of sports. “They will be looking for 22-24 players for each of the two teams tomorrow night and we expect players from all over the state to show up. The tryouts are open to the public.”

Tryouts are for two teams—an under 18 (1993-1994) and an under 16 team (1995-1996)– and will take place from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Players in the Academy have gone on to represent the United States with the National Team, and quite often become professional players. “Being a part of the U.S. Soccer Academy means you are one step away to being on the national team,” said Rob O’Nan, president of the Clearwater Chargers which had Korey Veeder and Zack MacMath, two Academy players, drafted by Major League Soccer teams, Columbus and Philadelphia this year.

Competitive tryouts for the Club’s competitive teams will take place from May 31-June 6 for ages 4-19, and sign-up for the recreational league will begin in August. The Clearwater Chargers are also looking for an administrative staff, coaches and assistant coaches for their Premier Sports Campus program. Anyone interested in these positions or more information about all of the tryouts can go to, www.chargerdevelopmentacademy.com for Academy information, www.clearwaterchargers.com
for Club information or e-mail chargerssoccerinfo@gmail.com with questions.

The inaugural event at the campus was last weekend, when 64 teams from the Florida Youth Soccer Association competed. Local coach Marc Jones’ team moved on to the final four tournament with a chance to compete for the state championship!

The Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch is a multi-purpose facility that is home to 22 full-sized, mixed use fields for soccer, lacrosse and other amateur sports, and features Celebration grass and underground irrigation. The complex is used for amateur and professional top-flight and world-class sporting tournaments, events, camps and clinics and is located in Lakewood Ranch-- the 8,500-acre award winning master-planned community in Sarasota and Manatee counties on the West Coast of Florida. www.lakewoodranch.com
