We really enjoyed doing this issue, “Ovation,” focusing on art and culture. What’s great about these subjects is that they’re so inclusive, probably due to the subjectivity of what people appreciate as art. Go to anyone’s home and look at what they have hanging on their walls or displayed in cabinets or on tables: sometimes you’ll marvel at their exquisite taste, and other times you’ll wonder what garage sale they happened across. The same thing is true at museums: not everyone fancies Picassos or Van Goghs. People’s tastes are mix and match.

And what fun we had with our stories, mixing art with culture and serious with light-hearted. Abby Weingarten examined art’s usefulness as a teaching tool for core subjects in at-risk youth; Georgia Brown’s piece on thrift shopping gave us a look at another fun way to recycle; and Matt Griswold took a sociological look at games, with a humorous bent. We also covered international food markets, learned about the history of what is arguably everyone’s first art tool—the crayon; headed west to find our inner cowboy, and headed way east with a first-hand account of a tour of duty served in Afghanistan by one of Lakewood Ranch’s own.

Ah, yes, art and culture…you like what you like, I’ll like what I like, and we’ll all be happy forever!
