Lakewood Ranch: A Proud Heritage

1922, The Uihlein family, founders of the Schlitz Brewing Company, acquired more than 48 square miles of land east of I-75 in Manatee and Sarasota counties, at the southern reaches of the greater Tampa Bay area, creating what is today Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, Inc. (SMR).

In intervening years, SMR expanded to include the award-winning master-planned community of Lakewood Ranch, SMR Aggregates, The Sarasota Polo Club, and the diversified agricultural operations of SMR Farms.

Still Growing Florida

We started more than 80 years ago with timber and ranching. Today, our 31,000-acre agribusiness, SMR Farms, produces sod and improved turf grasses, containerized and field-grown trees, premium Brangus and hybrid cattle, and citrus for both the juice and fresh-fruit markets.

We're proud of the reputation we earned over the years and the confidence our customers have in us. And we're proud to have been a leader in environmental stewardship and water management. Whether it's the preservation of sensitive habitat, extensive use of alternative water resources or implementation of Best Management Practices, we've made natural resource management a part of every decision.
